How to get to Blue Lagoon Malta

Ferry/ Public transport

The public ferry to Comino Island is a convenient and affordable way to reach the beautiful Blue Lagoon. Ferry departs from Cirkewwa in Malta and Mgarr Harbour in Goza. The trip takes about 20-30 minutes and tickets can be purchased at the ferry terminals or online. It’s advisable to check the schedule and book in advance during peak tourist seasons. More details here.

Tour Boats

Tour boats run to Blue Lagoon and Comino Island from various harbours in Malta (Sliema and St Paul’s Bay) and Gozo (Mgarr Harbour and Qala) throughout the day. Tours can range from a few hours to all day depending on the package and itinerary.

Day trip to Blue Lagoon Malta – Visiting Comino Island

With cool breeze blowing our hair away and the ferry boat rocking on choppy waters, we made our way towards Comino island. Kids were very excited, their happy smiles only interrupted by curious questions.

The ferry took a route closer to the caves, slowing down so that we could take in the beauty of the stunning landscape.

The water, a captivating spectrum of shades of blues and greens, reminded me of jewel-toned sapphires and emeralds slowly transitioning to a stunning turquoise near the shore. What else could this place be called but the Blue Lagoon!

As we alighted the ferry, we were greeted with calm, serene, shallow waters off a small sandy patch of beach surrounded by rugged cliffs. This sun-kissed beach certainly had the clearest waters I have ever seen!

Considering it was March end, an off-peak season, the place was busy but not in the way it has been described to be during the peak season. In peak season, this tiny island pretty much fills up with people sunbathing everywhere.

A short climb up the cliff, there are kiosks selling drinks and food, conveniences like sunglasses, flip-flops, etc. and toilet facilities.

You could also hike further up and explore the island, make your way to Santa Maria beach. Or you could swim to Cominetto island across. We stayed at the Blue Lagoon as the kids loved it there. They played in the water and built sandcastles while enjoying the beautiful sunshine.

Useful Tips for visiting Blue Lagoon Malta

  • Aim to arriving early if travelling during the busier season.
  • If travelling during the off peak season, be flexible with your itinerary and pick a sunny day to visit Comino.
  • Don’t forget to pack all your beach essentials like sunscreen, towels, flip flops and swimwear. Buying at the kiosks could be very expensive.
