Sundays are for lie-ins and Saturdays are for brunches, that’s my mantra. Good food and long conversations! Aren’t they the most wonderful way to begin a Saturday? Mr AW and I recently went to Kudu, Peckham for brunch and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

A recent opening, Kudu is a South African inspired restaurant in Peckham. It’s a venture by Patrick Williams (head chef) and his partner Amy Corbin (front of house), the daughter of the man behind the restaurants like The Wolseley and The Delaunay. The menu at this casual yet classy neighbourhood restaurant is modern European but with South African inspiration (Patrick being from South Africa).

With less than 30 minutes on the Overground to Queens Road Peckham station, getting to Kudu was very convenient. That’s always a plus for Saturday mornings, no?

At the entrance, we pushed aside heavy velvet curtains to step inside a small but beautifully decorated space. Walls with uneven surfaces inlaid at places with light green-ish tiles, reclaimed parquet flooring and the exposed grey brickwork provided a rustic look while the teal velvet upholstery, the pale millennial pink colour on the walls and the ceilings and the open kitchen with bar stools oozed a trendy, modern vibe.

The restaurant was already half-full at 11 am and it got busier thereafter. Since we already had a reservation, we were promptly seated at a table for two. We quickly settled in and placed the order for the Shakshuka, Waffles and Bloody Marys.

I may sound like I’m raving (and yes I am) but the Shakshuka was simply perfection. Served in a hot skillet, it had the right amount of smokiness coming from the tomatoes cooked with paprika, eggs, parmesan crisps and burnt cavolo nero (Italian kale).

The sourdough waffles were cooked with maple syrup and served with bacon, sour cream and two fried duck eggs on the top. I am a vegetarian so I will have to rely on Mr AW’s word on it. When it comes to food, he is a man of few words. It’s either “Good” or “Bad” and he thought the waffles were good 😀

Although there was nothing South African about what we ordered and I was told that its the dinner menu that draws more influence. (Note to self: Book dinner at Kudu 😉 )

The final flourish, however, and unmissable at Kudu (IMHO) is the pumpkin tart. I rarely ever order dessert when I am out for brunch. I am glad I made an exception for Kudu. The crispy pastry filled with sweet pumpkin is beautifully contrasted with salted caramel and a scoop of charcoal and almond ice cream. Sounds unusual, right? But it works, oh it works!

I can’t wait to return to Kudu, possibly for dinner next time and to try some of that Kudu bread. The food was amazing, the wait staff were attentive and friendly, the service was quick and the decor was gorgeous thus making us two foodies very, very happy.
