I am a big fan of watching movies. In today’s post, I am talking about some of my favourites ones, those that opened my mind and eyes to new places and cultures and inspired the wanderlust in me.
I must admit though, since the arrival of Netflix in my life, I haven’t been to the cinemas as often as I should. However, on the plus side, the number of movies and television shows that I watch has greatly increased. Yes, I am completely guilty of binge-watching 😉 Can you blame me though? It’s a pleasure watching movies and shows on high definition televisions like these Panasonic Smart TVs, with their sleek design and beautifully bright, colourful display.
When I started to list down the movies that inspired my wanderlust, I realised that all of them are part of the “Romance” genre. I am not surprised about it, though. Mr AW and I travel as a couple and we certainly believe in the romance of travel. The thrill and excitement of visiting a new place or re-visiting some of our favourite places together, creating new memories and savouring the old ones, discovering traits and characteristics of each other by being in the unknown territory – travelling together can certainly bring people closer. By the way, Mr AW and I met during one of our travels 😉
So, here are the movies that inspired me to travel more.
Before Sunrise
Before Sunrise is one of my all-time favourite movies. Céline and Jesse meet on a train and decide to disembark in Vienna. They spend a night together walking and talking and getting to know each other until the next morning when they simply go their separate ways. Their chemistry is palpable and the “will they – will they not get together” question is always in the air.
It was “Before Sunrise” (along with the other two movies in the trilogy – Before Sunset and Before Midnight) that really inspired me to visit Europe and explore its cities on foot, walking and talking all the way.
P.S. The movies in this trilogy are the only DVDs that I own.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a witty film about two friends, Vicky and Cristina, who spend a summer in Barcelona. They both fall for an artist called Juan Antonio who wants them both too. However, he is also attached to his unstable ex-wife Maria Elena.
The beautiful locales, the sepia-toned visuals, the running commentary and the sounds of Spanish guitar painted an idyllic picture of Spain and I couldn’t wait to visit Barcelona. I ended up building the hype in my mind to such an extent that I was almost disappointed when I went (the fact that it was winter didn’t help either).
Out of Africa
Out of Africa is based on the autobiographical writings of Danish author, Isak Dinesen. After being spurned in love, Karen marries her lover’s brother and moves to Kenya where they establish and maintain their farms. Throughout the film, Karen finds love and success, heartbreak and setbacks – all against the backdrop of a beautifully shot film.
Although the movie is quite slow in pace, what I loved about this film is its stunning cinematography. The breath-taking landscape and wildlife shot on location firmly put Kenya on my travel bucket list. I hope to visit sometime soon!
Are there any movies that inspired you to travel? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to know!
Pin it for later!
Cheers,
Ameeta xx
