I love travelling and I am not a nervous flyer but there was a time when I did not look forward to long plane journeys. I could never sleep easily on the plane and I always ended up looking messy and feeling groggy by the time I reached the destination. Until I started following the tips for surviving long flights as mentioned below. Call them tricks, tips, hacks or even rules – they have made long plane journeys as well as the time spent at airports much more bearable for me. Hope you find them as useful as I do.
Keep Hydrated
- Drink a lot of water. Buy a bottle of water after clearing security. You can then ask the flight attendant to refill it up for you, as required. If you ask me, sitting on the aisle seat is a better idea 😉
- Skip the alcohol, free or not. Skip caffeine too, this one’s very difficult for me, but I try hard!
- Avoid wearing contact lenses in flight, if you can.
- Don’t forget your skincare. Moisturise your skin well. Read more about my In Flight Skincare Routine.
Stay Comfortable
- Eye masks and noise cancelling headphones are always a good idea.
- An oversized scarf comes handy if the temperature is too low for you.
- Wear slip-on shoes. They are easier to remove if asked during security, and also comfortable in-flight.
- Wear socks – in case you have to remove your shoes.
Feel Fresh
- Carry an extra change of clothes, to switch at the end of a long flight.
- Keep a travel-sized dental kit with you. In case you forget to carry it, ask the flight attendant if they have an extra one. They usually do for the business class. It doesn’t hurt to ask, even if you are flying economy.
- Apply a deodorant. Do not wear an over-bearing perfume. Be mindful of your fellow passengers.
- Wear loose and comfortable clothes made from natural fibres like cotton, linen, silk or wool which have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. They will smell fresh and not sweaty.
Be Smart
- Hand over your big jackets and coats to the flight attendant. They will put your boarding pass in the pocket and neatly hang them in a closet. You won’t need to stuff them in the overhead storage nor sit uncomfortably with that bulk in your lap.
- Carry a pen with you, and fill out the landing cards in the flight itself. This avoids any kind of delay in the immigration queue.
- Speaking of queues, when queuing for security, take a moment to look out for fast moving queues.
- Another queue that I find a bit annoying is the one while boarding the flight. If you have been allocated a seat number, just sit back and relax in the waiting area. Join the queue only when your seat sequence is called out.
