Florence – Let’s take a walk!

Walking tour of Florence

A few years ago, I found myself in Florence for a train connection with a few hours to spare. I simply could not have spent that time waiting on a station platform while I am in one of the most beautiful cities not just in Italy, but in the world. So, I put my bag in one of the lockers on the station and set out to explore the city – on foot!

Florence is quite a small city. But don’t get fooled by its size because there is history and art seeping from every corner of this Tuscan capital. After all, it is the birthplace of the Renaissance. The advantage, however, is that you can walk the length of the city in under an hour. How convenient for me, right?

Speaking of convenience, I had my very own personal tour guide to take me around. Don’t worry,  I will tell you how 🙂 Have you heard of audio podcasts by Rick Steves? I had downloaded them on my phone before travelling to Italy and cannot recommend them enough. They were my constant companions all through Rome, and then later in Florence. All I had to do was plug in my earphones and walk! The podcast gives you directions, descriptions, history and insights and anecdotes and also the best vantage points. And, all this free of cost. Just another example to show that there are so many ways out there to explore and experience new places. Travel tip of the day?!

So here’s the podcast for the Florence walking tour that I used. And here‘s the link for other podcasts that are available.

The walking tour of Florence started at the most famous sight in Florence – the Duomo! Let’s take a walk, shall we?

I would definitely go back to Florence and spend more time there. This was, after all, just a teaser. I would love to hear your thoughts on this blog post and whether you would give the podcasts a go. Leave your comments below. Ciao!

Cheers,

Ameeta

It is incredible. All I can do is simply marvel at all the art and the architecture, and wonder how they did it all those years ago.
